Morocco Surfing - Searching for the Perfect Wave

Took a trip to Morocco a few months back made it there after an emergency landing in Lisbon airport. Well you know that no surf trip goes off without something going wrong. Lucky that was the end of it. Landed in Agadir on the Sunday. Everything was so different. What a place. I travelled there alone. I brought two boards which travelled well not a ding or even a pressure dent.  I was collected in the airport and travelled about 30-40 minutes north. The journey was a good chance to sit back and take it all in.

I stayed in a little fishing Village called Taghazout. It’s like a large surf camp. There is about four surf shops there and you have to haggle even for wax. I stayed in the Auberge on the beach which is part of Surf Camp Moroc. It was perfect for what I needed I had a bed to sleep in and a bed for my boards. The crew running the Auberge were cool and stayed up with us when the doors were locked. I met some really cool people who I had some great sessions in the water with and also some good nights in with some good food after our long days. The food was really good the local Tangines were plentiful but I stuck to what I knew best a bit of pasta bolognaise and a few chips. From my balcony I was looking out over anchors a famous right hand point break. On a good day it can run for a good 300meters. I saw some beautiful sunsets there in the evenings and was woken by the fishing boats about six in the morning when they were starting their days fishing. It was no harm because this was a good time to start your days surfing, get in the water before the crowds.

It was great I surfed every day twice a day every day. When Anchors was going off I was in the water at first light and after a bit of food and some stretching was back in the water for the afternoon. We had transport to and from all the other surf spots. The swell dropped off for about two days so we surfed a place called Tamri. A nice beach break that can get pretty hollow on the inside I pulled into a few bombs and got nailed on a few too.

Another day we drove further north and surfed in a place called Imessouane this place was beautiful and the surf was cranking had two great sessions here and only a few of us in the water. I just taught to myself, how can you beat this. It seemed to me though the further north you went the stronger the smells got. This was a tiny village and its focus point is the slip by the pier where the boats go in and out.Our guides were on their game they seemed to get it right each time. Where ever we ended up we got good waves.

I took a trip into the Souk with some of the guys I had met one afternoon which was an experience not to be forgotten. This place was incredible I sampled the mint Tea and had a bit of fun haggling with the Moroccans. Again there were some very strong smells here but all in all it was an experience and a good day out.

My favourite part of the trip was surfing Anchors I got some serious waves out there and if you show a bit of respect to the locals it makes for a better session.

I damaged my board on my first day in Anchors it got washed up on the rocks. My leash rope opened.  I got a few dings on the rails and the tail but got it fixed up by one of the local boys who done a great job for near to nothing I’m still riding it now. Lucky I brought a second board. On the same day a Belgium guy ended up in hospital because he timed it wrong getting out and washed up on the point. He dropped by where I was staying the next day and I spoke with him for a bit. I felt sorry for him because he had another four days to go and I don’t think he was going to get in the water again. His friend was funny he surfed twice that day while his buddy was watching drinking some mint tea.

As I said already I loved Morocco and met some cool people I had and have some great memories. I would recommend this place to anyone be it travels alone or with a group. It was a great experience to meet some new people that were chasing the same thing I was “The Perfect Wave” I am planning to take a trip back next January but this time I will drag some of my buddies along. “Can’t Wait”
